FULL DETAILS Heat are BBL CHAMPIONS!
Poujoulat Heat Guildford have won the BBL Championship after a thrilling title race was finally decided on the last day of the regular season. Heat, who earlier in the season won the BBL Cup, went in to the final day needing to defeat London United to secure their first ever BBL Championship Crown. Club Captain Mike Martin provided the pivotal performance with 22 points and 13 rebounds as his side comfortably saw off the challenge from the capital with a 114-85 success in front of a packed house at the Guildford Spectrum on Sunday afternoon. Heat Chairman Mike Davies was understandably delighted “We have had a rollercoaster ride over the last 2 years but hard work by many people has contributed to the clubs success – just shows what can be achieved by team work both on and off the court”. It was the Sheffield Sharks who had headed in to the final weekend of the season in the box seat at the top of the table but with a difficult trip to make to the North East on Friday night. Defending Champions Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles provided the final twist in the title race, defeating the Sharks 94-89 in a tense game to throw the advantage back to the Heat. The Sharks finished in the runners-up berth, just two points behind the Heat, courtesy of a 66-64 success over the Milton Keynes Lions yesterday. The top eight teams in the BBL Championship now turn their attention to the BBL Championship Playoffs with the Quarter Final Round played around next weekend.
