United started the strongest, bagging the opening 4 points through Marcus Knight and Bryant Feggins. Two and a quarter minutes into the game, Mike Martin opened the Heat scoring off a Danny Gilbert assist only for Heat old-boy Marlin Capers to bag 4 points either side of a Kabir Abu mid-range jumper to put United 8-4 up with 6.52 to play. Mike Martin closed the gap for the Heat, only to see Marlin Capers drain a triple at the other end. Danny Gilbert continued his great recent form, nailing a triple in reply for the Heat only to see Tarick Johnson do the same at the other end for a 14-9 United lead. A 7-2 United burst, after the 2 teams had traded a couple of scores, gave them a 25-15 lead with 1.45 to play. A Paul James timeout inspired his team to close out the quarter with an 11-2 run. Dan Wardrope's 3 pointer from the corner, and his steal after some great defensive work led to Dave Mallon opening his account from Danny Gilbert's assist. Bryant Feggins responded for London, but Wardrope struck again from outside the arc. Danny Gilbert sealed the Heat comeback, draining a three pointer on the buzzer to send the Heat to the bench with a 28-27 1st quarter lead to the delight of his coach and the big Heat crowd.
London agan started strong, posting the 1st 4 points through Marcus Knight and Tarick Johnson who soon picked up his 3rd foul to send Mike Martin to the line. He made 1 of 2, and London rattled off a further 6 unanswered points through Capers and Feggins to give them a 35-29 lead. Dave Mallon replied for the Heat who couldn't buy a bucket for the first 4 minutes, but after a Tony Garbelotto timeout they outscored London 22-2 over the remaining 6 minutes seven seconds of the quarter. Brian Dux' finger roll set the Heat on their way as he converted the free throw for the 3 point play. Dean Williams' block kept London out, paving the way for Danny Gilbert to add 5 straight points from the free throw line and another from outside the arc to give the Heat a 39-37 lead. Dave Mallon's foul sent Bryant Feggins to the line where he made both for London's only reply, briefly levelling the scores again at 39 each. Mike Martin hit back with 5 straight points, through a strong inside move drawing the foul and converting the bonus and another inside score off Brian Dux' lobbed assist. Danny Gilbert followed up with a reverse layup, and his quick pass allowed Chris Brown to open his account and put the Heat 48-39 ahead going into the last minute of the half. Danny Gilbert took his tally to 15 for the half with a dunk on the break before Brian Dux drove the lane for a left handed layup in the dying seconds, taking the Heat into the half time break with a commanding 52-39 lead.
Tarick Johnson opened the second half scoring for London to cut the deficit to 11, before the teams traded 3 pointers. Dux went first from seriously long range, and Marlin Capers responded for London. Dean Williams joined in with a trey from the top of the key to stretch the Heat lead out to 14 in the 3rd minute of the quarter. London responded with a 7-2 burst on the back of 5 points from Lataryl Williams either side of Dean Williams' drive to the hoop off Mike Martin's screen, and a couple of free throws from Marlin Capers to close the gap to 9. The Heat hit back with 13-2 surge, carving out a 20 point lead. Brian Dux' change of pace led to a score off the drive to start the run. Danny Gilbert's steal led to score for him at the other end after he faked one way and blew past the defender to the hoop shortly after which London called timeout. This didn't stop the Heat, and Dean Williams drained his second triple of the quarter. Danny Gilbert then turned provider, as Mike Martin stole the ball and bowled it under arm to Gilbert who returned the perfect pass for Martin to run on to and slam the ball home to the roars of the Heat fans. Marlin Capers slotted home a response for London which Dave Mallon countered with a short range shot on the baseline. Danny Gilbert's 2 free throws after Marlin Capers' foul capped off the run to give the Heat a 73-53 lead with 2.52 to play. The Heat were now looking in the groove, and imposing their game on London. Dave Mallon followed up his block with a foul on Tarick Johnson, who went to the line and made both shots to start a run of 7 straight personal for London. Mike Martin replied with 4 points of his own through a long jump shot and another big dunk from another Danny Gilbert assist to keep the Heat 17 points ahead. Dean Williams' tough drive for 2 through traffic started a 10-4 close to the quarter for the Heat. Laurent Irish countered with his first points, and Brian Dux added 2 free throws after Tarick Johnson's techincal foul, his 4th personal, followed up by Mike Martin's score. Irish replied again for London, and Danny Gilbert this time replied from the charity stripe. Rod Wellington closed out the quarter with a score off Dan Wardope's assist to take the Heat into the break holding an 87-64 lead.
London again opened with the 1st 4 points of the quarter through Feggins and Capers, but Rod Wellington continued his run a fine jump shot from the free throw line to start a game winning 20-6 run for the Heat. Mike Martin was fouled by Junior Williams as he tried to convert Brian Dux' brilliant pass, but he made both free throws to increase the Heat lead to 23. Dan Wardrope capped off a great quick-passing move from the Heat and went on to add 6 straight points for the Heat either side of free throws from Marcus Knight and a bucket from Bryant Feggins to push the Heat out to a 27 point lead at 99-72 with 6.15 to play. Rod Wellington's powerful dunk off Gilbert's assist brought the Heat century up and the crowd to their feet, and brought a timeout call from London coach Tony Garbelotto. Bryant Feggins nailed two free throws after the re-start, Dan Wardrope countered with his 8th point of the quarter. Dave Mallon capped off the run as he jammed the ball home off Danny Gilbert's assist after he had stolen the ball. Gilbert then joined the rest of the starting 5 on the bench for the remainder of the game, where they all stood and cheered their team mates on. 1 of 2 at the line from both Tarick Johnson and Marcus Knight closed the gap to 107-75 with 2.43 to play, and after Wellington had done likewise Paul James called timeout to talk over the remaining 2 minutes 37 seconds of the regular season. Marlin Capers converted a 3 point play after being sent to the line by Kabir Abu, closing the gap to 30 with 1.51 left. Dan Wardrope finished off the play from Rod Wellington's one-handed assist for the Heat's final score from open play with the clock on 1.19. Junior Williams quickly responded for London at the other end. Marcus Knight's foul sent Jon May to the line where he made 1 of his 2 shots and ensure every Heat player on the night got on the score sheet to emphasise the team effort tonight and throughout the season. Marlin Capers nailed another triple to take him to a game high 30 points against his old team, and Marcus Knight followed up seconds later with a steal and score to close the gap to 111-85 with 40 seconds of the regular season remaining. Despite the 26 point gap London continued play it to the buzzer, sending the Heat to the line twice in the last 33 seconds. Dan Wardrope first up, making both his shots for 21 point haul and with no time on the clock Rod Wellington made 1 from 2 to seal the win and league title for the Poujoulat Heat in only their second year of existence. Fantastic effort and a fantastic season guys. 2 trophies in the cabinet, and 1 to play for!!
